You shouldn't have to do this.  SC should start it's own instance of

I don't think this is a packaging bug.  According to Triode, log
messages can leak out at startup because the new logging mechanism is
ready yet.  AFAIK, it is ugly but harmless.  I'll open a bug on it.

This means that for some reason mysqld didn't start.  Anything
interesting in /var/cache/squeezecenter/mysql-error-log.txt?  What's
the output of "ps -ef | grep mysqld"?
