use GD for music/5999/cover_50x50.jpg

I installed the libgd2 library but it still seems to not be working.

[root at stan ~]# rpm -q libgd2
libgd2-2.0.33-3.2.20060mdk

So my questions are:
1.  Did previous versions of SS use GD?
2.  Is it necessary for SC7 to have GD to properly format images   
in the new default skin?
3.  How can I test to see if GD is working on my system and that SC can
find it? 

running on linux mandrake 2006.  SC7 nightly from 9/30.
