Could be.  In that case, this won't help.  But I'm surprised that the
windows implementation of perl doesn't have the ability to spawn a
process without creating a window.  I was thinking that the "messy dos
window" problem had to do specifically with the need to spawn a copy of
cmd.exe...which this suggestion does fix.
