The Duet is a package including the Squeezebox Receiver (a player) and
the Squeezebox Controller (wifi remote control). The Receiver has no
display or infra red capability. The Squeezebox Classic has a large
display on the player itself, and comes with a traditional IR remote
control rather than the Controller. Other than that they are basically
exactly the same.

I'd recommend starting with either the Duet or the Classic for your
situation (depending on your preference for having a display on the
player) and upgrading as and when you want to. Many (most) people are
very happy with the sound from the regular players - whilst of course
the Transporter is nice with a suitably high end system.

One thing worth pointing out is that once it's setup the SB players act
independently from whatever music you're playing on the computer itself
(e.g. through iTunes) - this trips up some people as they think of the
SB as a replacement for a VLAC (Very Long Audio Cable) which it isn't
:) This is a better way of doing things however, as it lets you
control the music from wherever you're listening to it rather than have
to go back to the computer to change it. Also, of course, it lets you
listen to different music on each player in the house.
