Finally got it all working:
Yes, the setuo is EXTREMELY flaky! I bought two Duets as I'm giving one
for a wedding present and the other is for friends. I spent hours and
hours trying to get the first remote to work and totally failed.
Fortunately, I had the second and it worked as soon as I set up the WEP
and saw the receiver right away. With the first remote, I had to take
it out of range of the router, remove the battery, insert the battery
and factory reset it several times. I gave up and reverted to remote
No. 2 and it worked but there were numerous multi-second dropouts. I
had loaded Squeezecenter 7 into the ReadyNAS not long after starting
all this and when I eventually got it to play music, at 2AM this
morning, it was filled with about 20% dropouts (each between 1 and 15
seconds). Kept 'loosing' the receiver (from the remote) and also kept
loosing the NAS music source. Noticed that it was still scanning the
content directory (several hours after installation) and guessed this
might be the issue. This morning remote 2 worked it worked right away
and no dropouts (sounds pretty good too). Tried remote No.1 and guess
what, it worked right away!!! It looks like one issue to watch out for
is that the scanning of the content directory really screws things up.
On any new setup, probably best to wait until it's fully scanned the
content directory as this activity seems to slow the server right down
and to confuse the remote units.
Briefly played a couple of tracks a few moments ago and it does sound a
magnificently better than my Sonos, which required an external (Linn
Numerik) DAC to make it sound any sound good. My thoughts are now to
build a really nice regulated supply to feed the receiver and see if it
makes it any better; definitely worth a shot! Haven’t played Duet
against the Sonos/Numerik but on first listening I suspect it might be
close, possibly better, and the Numerik D/A alone costs about £250
second hand on eBay, so I’m suspecting that it’s well worth
the pain to set the Duet up!!
NB Quite a lot of the albums (and pictures) are shown twice on the
remote, will investigate.
