[SlimDevices: Beginners] Can I use a squeezebox as a general soundcard?

Total newb question here:

I have a bunch of audio applications (music/midi players, slowdowners,
transcription software etc..) on my laptop. I'd like to output the
sound from these programs wirelessly to my stereo.

Can I buy a squeezebox, and have it treated just like a soundcard by
all these apps, so that my laptop can stream the audio output to the
squeezebox receiver and playback on my stereo?

Does the squeezebox show up as a 'Sound and Audio Device' on my XP
Control Panel?
