You've not said what format of file you ripped to - was it lossless or
lossy?  If you ripped to a lossy format then you will certainly hear
bad things like you mention, and it could easily be that the lower-fi
alternative routes are covering up the deficiencies.

One other conceivable problem - you haven't plugged the SB into a
"Phono" input on the receiver, have you?
