OK this all sounds rather confused. It seems like you have got music all
over the place which may be for valid reasons or may be just where it
landed :)
Especially if you have a large quantity of music it is desirable to
create and manage a proper library. There are tools which will help
this, I believe Media Monkey is one of them but I haven't ever used it
myself, others I'm sure can recommend a few.
I would suggest that you start by creating a single directory somewhere
convenient. There are many places this could go, I'd suggest it goes on
your biggest disk with the most free space and ideally not the C disk.
For example create the directory D:\music.
For each album artist create a directory under d:\music eg
d:\music\John Miles and d:\music\StatusQuo
Within each of those artist directories create a directory for each of
their albums eg d:\music\John Miles\Zaragon (yes that is where my id
comes from :) ) and d:\music\StatusQuo\In The Army Now
Into each of the directories move the relevant tracks.
Now set the Slimserver music directory to d:\music and scan.
There are programs, such as MediaMonkey that I mentioned, that will do
all that moving for you.
If you have music in a particular place where you don't want to move it
from then create a directory in d:\music called links eg d:\music\links
and within that directory create a shortcut to the directory that has
the music you can't move. Slimserver will follow the shortcut when
scanning.
You do have to be careful with links. Slimserver will follow the link
and then scan all the directories within the one pointed to by the link
and it will keep going down through directories until it can't find any
more. So if you create a link to say c:\my music and one to c:\my
music\singles then you will come across a problem of duplicate music
because in scanning c:\my music Slimserver will also scan c:\my
music\singles later it will see your second shortcut to c:\my
music\singles and scan that which as you can see will mean it scans it
twice which is not a good idea.
Ideally don't use links or shortcuts without a good reason and be
careful when doing so.
As others have mentioned any file that contains DRM will be ignored.
Some applications such as the Windows Media Player and iTunes can apply
DRM even to music that you have copied from CD yourself.
If you are really unfamiliar with creating directories and shortcuts
then I strongly recommend a music manager. However, using windows
explorer navigate to the directory where you want to create a new 'sub'
directory. With the directory highlighted in the left pane select
File->New->Folder and then give it a name. To create a shortcut in a
folder again navigate to the directory where you want to have the
shortcut and make sure it is highlighted in the left pane. The select
File->New->Shortcut and follow the wizard that pops up.
