[SlimDevices: Beginners] Softsqueeze Issues

I am running SoftSqueeze 3.4 (its what the SlimServer I have installed
gave me), but I've found that:

1 - it uses 100% of one of the cores of my dual-core CPU (which is a
fast Core 2, so decoding FLAC shouldn't tax it)
2 - it does something so that no new windows can open up for anything
(including Windows Explorer, running another program like Firefox,
...)

I am wondering:
1) is there something wierd with my system that causes this behavior?
2) where can I get a newer version of SoftSqueeze - the only direct
download site I can find is SourceForge, which has a 2.0 version (I see
there is a 3.6 version - but I have no idea where to get it)
