[SlimDevices: Beginners] Scan has only found a small amount of my songs

I'm sorry for asking what is probably I stupid question, but here goes. 
My scan found 166 albums, and I would guess I have well over 2,000. 
Some are under my music, some under my videos, but everything is on
windows media so I designated windows media as the path to search.  The
scan found a handfull of music in various folders but not everything I
have.  It seems like something is funny when I try to rescan in that
there are no drop down options under the "music folder" menue.  If I
cut and paste my path to windows media the rescan comes up the same,
with only finding 166 albums.  I read something in trouble shooting
about maybe having the wrong pathways (?) could this be my problem? 
Could less than 1/20 of my music have the right pathway?  If so how can
I fix that?  I am lost and am very gratefull for any help.
