[SlimDevices: Beginners] Anyone without problems?..

Thanks for the detailed tips. Unfortunately, they don't solve my
problems.

* Connecting the player to Ethernet does let me play from the Internet
or from the PC server. However, functions like Pause and Next/Previous
Track still don't work. And the remote continually tries to connect to
the WLAN even though it presumably doesn't have to!

* Going back to wireless takes me back to the same old runaround: my
network shows up in the list with a checkmark and a 'strong signal'
icon, but trying to do practically anything just gets me that
"Connecting..." screen, which after a few minutes drops to the "try
again" menu. Just to add insult to injury, the device seems to connect
to the server but drops the player; then it will find the player but
drop the server. It's like a bad Laurel & Hardy skit... in hell.

* My network settings are just fine, thanks. I'm not about to
reconfigure a network that works perfectly with a dozen other devices.
Clearly, the Duet is the odd man out here. (I'm not going to reinstall
Windows or change ISPs, either. Sorry.) The Duet player and remote are
within about two feet of each other, and both are about four feet from
the router, with nothing but a wooden floor in between.

* My Duet remote says that the software is up to date. Who am I to
contradict it? Squeezecenter has been reinstalled using the latest
version from the Web site. I've pulled the power on the player,
factory-reset the remote, rebooted the server, and disabled all my
security. NONE of which should have been necessary to get a simple
music player working.

* I'm using WEP 128-bit security (mainly for compatibility with older
devices), and not broadcasting the SSID. I've entered these details
repeatedly in the Duet remote. As I said, the network does show up on
the list. I've done this same procedure in the past three weeks with an
iPod Touch, a MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, an HP Vista notebook, a
Brother laser printer, an HP multifunction inkjet and an HP IPAQ
handheld. THEY all worked right away. (Well, Vista was kind of
horrible, but even it worked a lot easier than the Duet.)

* I've also tested numerous other player devices on this network,
including a Sonos audio system, a Linksys music player, and even
Logitech's Wireless Music dongle. I've never seen the kind of problems
that the Duet is giving me. I'm thrilled to hear that it does work for
some people, but if it's even CAPABLE of failing for some users the way
it has failed for me, that's just not good enough.

The only thing that keeps me fighting at all is the dwindling hope that
there could still be some simple fix. If anyone has any new ideas, I'll
be glad to try them. Otherwise, I'll contact tech support tomorrow, and
see if they've got any other words of wisdom. But at this point, just
about the only thing they could say that could even potentially change
my opinion of the Duet is: "Your unit is clearly defective, we're
sending a replacement overnight."
