If you're playing locally stored files, then yes. The SB doesn't know
how to read things off your hard drive, it only knows how to talk to
SC. You don't have to have the web page up though, SC keeps running in
the background.

It's not, your browser (IE, Firefox, Safari, whatever) is. 

SB <---> SC <---> Browser

In your case you happen to be running SC and the browser on the same
machine, but it doesn't have to be so. When you click the link the
browser sends a request to SC (in this case on 127.0.0.1:9000) and
waits for it to respond, hence the message.

Yes and no. It hasn't been sent anywhere, it's still right where you
put it, but I guess you could say it's now on your very own private
corner of the web.
