In my experience a considerable scan is required to find music,
playlists and album art.

Do ensure you only specify a path to your iTunes .xml files though and
ignore the standard music folder settings leaving them blank. Otherwise
you scan all your music twice. It's considerably faster doing an iTunes
scan than scanning the music folder directly.
