Tim
You are dead right in that maybe your are being a bit "negative" as you
will ONLY see postings on this forum from people with problems, which
are normally minor "user" related issues rather than "hardware" issues.
A lot of us are into "tweaking" and sometimes we tweak just that one
step too far, were as if we all were boring and just followed the
instructions provided then we would have no problems....and this forum
would NOT exist.
How many users bother to post on this forum saying they have NO
PROBLEMS???

I have used Qnaps for over 18 months with itunes as my library, with
those official "itunes tracks" that I pay for being burnt/copied back
as mp3's. The princilpe of a NAS is just like your state above in that
you can access your music with your SB's with out having a PC powered
on the whole time. You can use the NAS firstly as a backup device as
well with auto copying routines from your PC every day of your itunes
library xml files & mp3's etc, and secondly as your SS library.

The latest Qnaps are ideal for this purpose..........and a lot more.
Plus you have the benefit of this forum to help you out on problems
that one of us may have encounted before.
