hi, thanks for the v. clear step-by-steps.

i also built Perl 5.8.8 from the tarball (
http://www.perl.com/CPAN/src/stable.tar.gz ).  this does take a good
deal of time (i left it running overnight), but the entire system seems
a bit zippier as a result.

given the sluggishness of the LS, every little bit of performance
uptick helps.
